Boötes is a constellation in the northern sky, located near Ursa Major and Virgo. The name comes from the Latin and Greek words for herdsman, which is what it symbolizes. One of the 48 constellations described by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy, Boötes is now one of the 88 modern constellations. It was also mentioned as a point of navigation in Homer's Odyssey. In non-Western mythology, the stars of Boötes were incorporated into many different constellations. It contains the fourth-brightest star in the night sky, the orange giant Arcturus, aka Alpha Boötis. The constellation is most easily visible during the month of June.
