Pelikan M1000 Maki-e "Ivy and Komon" – Limited Edition Fountain Pen
Exquisite Japanese Maki-e Art Meets German Engineering
Experience the fusion of masterful Japanese artistry and precision German craftsmanship with the Pelikan M1000 Maki-e "Ivy and Komon" Limited Edition Fountain Pen. This ultra-rare collector’s piece combines the time-honoured Japanese Maki-e lacquer technique with Pelikan’s flagship M1000 Souverän model — resulting in a writing instrument that is both a cultural treasure and a high-performance fountain pen.
Crafted using the legendary Urushi lacquer, the pen features multiple layers of lacquer applied by hand, each polished to perfection in a process requiring immense skill and patience. The design is rendered using Togidashi Maki-e, a traditional method where coloured lacquer is drawn onto the surface and polished until the image appears to emerge from within. To create a raised, tactile design, the artist also applies Taka Maki-e, blending gold and charcoal powders into the lacquer so the patterns rise above the surface — a signature of premium Maki-e artistry.
The "Ivy and Komon" motif marries two symbolic and visually rich Japanese elements. Ivy, celebrated in classical poetry for its resilience and vivid autumn colours, represents beauty and endurance. The Komon pattern, traditionally found in Japanese kimono designs, is characterised by finely detailed, repeating motifs that evoke elegance and harmony. In this fountain pen, radiant orange ivy vines interlace with the Komon pattern, capturing the essence of Japanese autumn in intricate, hand-painted detail.
The pen is built on Pelikan’s flagship M1000 chassis, engineered in Germany and fitted with an 18-carat gold nib finished with rhodium trim, available in medium (M) size. Each pen is individually signed by the Maki-e artist, underscoring its uniqueness and authenticity.
Limited to only 123 pieces worldwide, the Pelikan M1000 Maki-e "Ivy and Komon" is a true collector’s item, presented in a traditional Japanese Paulownia wood gift box, known for its beauty, lightness, and cultural significance.
